Birthdays and Celebrations

Parents are invited to bring a simple treat for a child’s birthday to share with the class during a brief celebration at the end of the school day. Be sure to talk to your child’s teacher in advance to schedule.

Simple treats are easy to eat and do not require utensils like cupcakes, brownies, muffins, or cookies. Do not bring cake.  Please ensure that birthday treats do not contain nuts.  Individual fruit juice boxes, like apple, orange, or fruit juice, are acceptable. Do not bring soda.

If you plan to have a party at home or at a location outside your home, please consider the children in the class who are not invited. We do not allow the teacher or student to distribute invitations in a class.

Parents/Guardians are not allowed in the classrooms for celebrations (except for Pre-K). However, please bring items by 12Noon labeled with the student's name and classroom to the school office as teachers like to give the snacks after lunch.

Please note: Birthday celebrations are an opportunity for the children to recognize a classmate’s special day, and siblings from another grade do not attend. In general, holidays are kept low-key at school. When holidays are incorporated into the curriculum, the emphasis is always on exploring various cultures and historical significance.

Goody Bag Policy

The policy listed on our Family Handbook at PS 65 does not permit goody bags containing edible items.  This has been in effect since we opened our doors in 2008 and came about for the following reasons:

  • Safety - Many students have allergies to food and dyes.
  • Parent/Guardian Choice - Many of our families do not permit their children to eat candy and have requested that the school not expose them to candy.

Below is a list of items that are acceptable treats/snacks for our "dolphins":

  • carrot sticks
  • fruit, fruit snacks, applesauce - if you send in grapes, please peel them
  • fruit juice
  • all-natural potato chips, pretzels, braided pretzels, and cookies
  • ice pops and fruit pops

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.  If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to get in touch with Ms. Santaliz, Parent Coordinator, at nsantaliz@schools.nyc.gov
